EXPERIENCE VERMONT at a Churchill House Learning Weekend
A lasting memory (and lifelong skill) await you in the heart of Vermont...
~ We are pleased to now offer these enjoyable weekends on a customized basis: please call or email us to arrange a workshop that fits your dates and our availability. Note that some workshops are seasonal (canning, gardening) and cannot be run year-round.
Learn the Art of Home Canning
Maybe you have fond memories of Grandma "putting food by" at the end of summer, harvesting her garden and carefully preserving the wholesome foods for those bleak winter days. Or perhaps you are a city dweller who has an urban garden and yearns to extend your enjoyment of the produce that you have grown. Whatever the case, home canning and preserving is enjoying a renewed vogue, and if you have some curiosity about the subject, here's your chance to satisfy it. Come to Vermont for a late summer weekend and help Olya harvest her organic garden and learn from her the art of home canning. You will have your questions answered, develop skills you never knew you had, and leave with both a couple of jars of preserves and a friend in Vermont to call if questions arise when you try it in your own home.
Knitting for Beginners
What could be a more touching gift than a hand-knitted blanket, scarf-and-mittens, or warm winter hat, presented by you to someone you care about? If creating something beautiful using just a pair of needles worked by your own hands appeals to you, come to a cozy Vermont inn on select winter weekends, enjoy a great couple of days, and depart (quasi-certified by your instructor Olya) as one of the world's knitters.
Starting Your Backyard Garden
There are few more miraculous processes in life than planting a seed in the ground and nurturing it to full fruit in partnership with mother nature. At the Churchill House Inn, we have a small organic vegetable and herb garden and thin mountain soil, but nevertheless provide much of our own fresh produce all season long. Olya will impart her experience to you and help you to choose, plan, and work your own garden through discussion as well as hands-on experience in our little piece of Vermont.
Guided Historical Tour and Gravestone Rubbing
Explore a quintissential New England village, replete with almost 250 National Historic Register buildings and picture-postcard streets. Seth will lead you on a guided tour of the village of Brandon and help you understand how New England towns came to be the way they are. A little gravestone rubbing and maybe even a recital of a famous piece of music written by a Brandonian will add to the experience.
Genealogy for the Daring
You never know what (or who) you'll find in your family tree. If you dare to find out but don't know where to start, Seth will point you in the right direction and offer some practical advice on the process as well as some insight from experience. Bring your questions, but also your information -- we'll take a crack at some formats and try to forecast the road ahead based on what you already know.
